NBA Playoffs May 12 Preview: Timberwolves-Spurs Game 5 and the Pistons-Cavaliers Pivot

Minnesota and San Antonio are tied 2-2 entering a loaded Game 5, while Detroit host Cleveland on Wednesday after Donovan Mitchell's Game 4 eruption. Full playoff preview and picks.

The NBA playoff board is built around two swing games: Timberwolves at Spurs on Tuesday night and Cavaliers at Pistons on Wednesday. Both series are tied 2-2, which makes these the first real leverage spots of the round. The Game 5 winner does not close the series, but it usually forces the opponent into desperation basketball.

Our card is simple: take the points with Minnesota tonight and back Detroit at home on Wednesday.

Timberwolves at Spurs, Game 5

San Antonio have the home court, the best player in the series if Victor Wembanyama controls the paint, and the kind of defensive ceiling that can bury teams when their jumpers go cold. That is why the market has leaned so hard toward the Spurs.

The problem is the number. A double-digit spread in a 2-2 playoff series asks San Antonio to do more than win. It asks the Spurs to win comfortably against an opponent that has already shown it can absorb Wembanyama's rim pressure and answer with Anthony Edwards' late-clock shot creation.

Minnesota's path is not complicated. Edwards has to win enough isolation possessions, the Wolves have to rebound well enough to prevent Spurs runouts, and Rudy Gobert has to stay out of foul trouble. If those boxes are checked, Minnesota can lose the game and still cover.

The De'Aaron Fox injury cloud matters too. If Fox is limited or unavailable, San Antonio's half-court shot creation becomes more dependent on Wembanyama touches, Devin Vassell movement, and secondary guards making decisions under pressure. That can still work, but it makes a double-digit cover harder to trust.

Pick: Timberwolves +10.5

Cavaliers at Pistons, Game 5

Cleveland's best argument is star power. Donovan Mitchell just delivered a 43-point Game 4, and when he gets downhill the Cavaliers can survive ugly offensive stretches. Evan Mobley's defensive range also gives Cleveland enough lineup flexibility to keep Cade Cunningham away from the easiest reads.

Detroit's argument is simpler: the Pistons keep winning at home in this series.

The Pistons have used their size, pace, and crowd energy to make Cleveland uncomfortable. Their best stretches have come when Cunningham gets early offense before the Cavs can load up, then Detroit turns missed shots into immediate pressure. In a Game 5, that home rhythm matters.

The price will likely be shorter than Minnesota's spread, but the matchup points us toward Detroit. Cleveland can win if Mitchell owns the fourth quarter again. Detroit are the better side to trust for 48 minutes at home.

Pick: Pistons moneyline

Final Read

Game 5s are not about comfort. They are about which team can survive the first major adjustment cycle of a series. San Antonio may still win tonight, but the spread gives Minnesota enough room. Detroit, meanwhile, gets the better venue and enough physical edge to justify a home moneyline play.
